Things I Made This Weekend: A List

Most Wonderful Time of the Year!
Are you counting down the days? I love this time of year. As a kid, we had a million advent calendars around the house so that everyone had a turn each day to be a part of the countdown. Now, I just want to hold onto each day and make it last a little longer. A month is not long enough for me to get my fill of Christmas music in the car, sparkling lights outside, and yummy Christmas-y food. But what I love most of all is the reason we celebrate. We had a big nativity exhibition at our church last weekend, and as I walked around looking at the displays, I was struck again by how beautiful the Nativity story is. I love that there is a place for everyone at the manger, and that every individual in the story offers us a gift--teaching us the kind of people we can be.
Mary believes in seemingly impossible things and understands in a very personal way that she matters to her Heavenly Father. And she takes time to ponder the miracles in her life.
Joseph humbly accepts a life that he probably never planned on, but trusts that the Lord has a bigger plan. And he doesn't just go along grudgingly--he gives his whole heart to his family and does all that he can to protect them, teach them, love them.
The shepherds go about their everyday life and work, and then when something miraculous happens (angels!!), they rush to find the hope they have been waiting for their entire lives. And they don't stop there--once they've seen the Christ child themselves, they go out to share that joy with others.
The angels declare to all that will hear that joy and hope and peace are real. And when you know that, you can't help but sing!
The wise men bring their best gifts to the child--not thinking about what will look good to everyone else, or what's the "it" gift to give. They bring gifts to show that they understand who this baby really is and give Him gifts for a king.
In several of the Nativity scenes I saw, the Christ child wasn't lying in the manger, but sitting upright with his arms stretched out. I love that image because it is what Christmas feels like to me--our Savior reminding us that He came for us and that we have a place where He is.

I am a white/blue Cinderella-Tenderheart Bear-Labrador Retriever

So on Friday in what may or may not be my place of employment with some cool people who may or may not be my co-workers, we became obsessed with personality tests. I don't even know how it started but suddenly we all desperately needed to know which Disney princess we are. I'm a Cinderella apparently (which means I have a "keen intelligent sense of humor" and I "find delight in my tiny animal friends"). I really thought I'd be more of a Belle, but there you have it.THEN, the results of the Disney princess quiz very helpfully were linked to the Care Bear quiz. (I'm Tenderheart Bear). And of course this lead us to wonder, how many different types of quizzes are out there? A friend, let's call her Amanda, loves dogs, so we took a dog quiz. Amanda was not too thrilled to be a chihuahua, so she retook the quiz until she got a breed she liked better. Eventually we decided we better get back to "work."
Anyway, all of this is to say I love random personality quizzes! Confession--I even take quizzes that don't really apply to me (such as "Are You a Helicopter Mom?"). If I come across it, I'm sorely tempted. I like answering random questions that lead to a "Ta Da" revelation about myself. And isn't it so much easier when we can peg ourselves as this or that? Oh you're a blue with a little yellow? ah-ha. Now I totally understand you. But then again, how honest are we when we answer the questions. Haven't you ever tried to "fix" your own results? Let's face it, I probably could have been more of an Ariel if I had wanted to.
Anyhoo...I find myself wishing I could take one of those what-should-I-be-when-I-grow-up quizzes again. Not because I want a different job, but sometimes it's just fun to imagine "a whole nother Leah." Got any more quizzes for me?

In which Leah tries to be trendy
It's Super Cute Tuesday, and I thought I had the perfect outfit. Long dress, chunky earrings, summer scarf, espadrilles. Cute with a capital C. Only the summer scarf idea proved practically life-threatening. I know, I know, any type of scarf on an AUGUST Texas day should be outlawed. But I figured I'd be spending most of my day in the sub-zero A/C of the museum so it would fine. Didn't count on the scarf's ability to cinch around my windpipe and cut off my oxygen supply. I nearly strangled myself no less than three times today--the scarf got stuck in my rolly chair, stuck to velcro while I tried to moved around these big climbing cushions, and then I inadvertently stepped on it and almost jerked my head off. It's not like I'm new to the scarf scene. For the love, I lived in Boston for 6 years! But this scarf was a slippery little devil--literally.So end of the day: Scarf--3, Leah--0. We'll see if I try for a rematch.

Nightmares on MacArthur Street
I had one of my stress nightmares last night. Not the standing in front of the masses in nothing but my birthday suit . . . or the being chased by a menacing, terrifying but unseen something sort of dreams. No, my stress nightmares almost always involve
SCHOOL.
I'm sure that reveals something extremely deep about me. Like the fact that I'm exceptionally thoughtful and diligent and scholarly. Or that I'm so Type A, my worst fears involve not following the rules. Hmmm...
Anyway, this time it was a variation on the usual theme. I was merrily jumping into a car to go to Mount Vernon with a group of friends (yes even in my dreams I like to visit historic places). We were almost there when all of a sudden it hit me--"I am a teacher!! It is a school day. I am NOT ALLOWED to just go have fun on a school day. I have no substitute. My kids are probably climbing up the walls. If anything happens to them, it will be MY FAULT!" The rest of the dream involved my fruitless attempts to get back to school before anyone realized I wasn't there. Woke up before I ever managed to get there.
Sigh! I don't often remember my dreams anyway, but when I do, it's never a dream that helps me solve a problem or gives me deep insights into life. Nope...it's about school. What are you dreamin' about?
SCHOOL.

This day will be luck
I invited a few friends over last night for a Chinese New Year's Celebration. I'm not traditionally a die-hard Chinese New Year-celebrator, but it seemed like a good enough reason to have a dinner party. I had way more fun setting the table than making the food. Don't get me wrong, I love tasty food, but there's more joy in making things lovely for me. We had wonton soup, chicken stir fry lettuce wraps, egg rolls and fried rice (or "flied lice" as my Dad likes to say). My friend MaryAnn brought over some more traditional Chinese food--moon cakes, this sticky rice-banana stuff, and a sweet sesame cracker thing. Hmm...acquired taste is all I will say.
We ended our meal with fortune cookies, which brings me to my musings of the day. (Or rather my complaints?). I really think that fortune cookies should live up to their names and give, well...fortunes. Not advice, not some wise ole proverb, not some hard to understand riddle, but a FORTUNE. Here are some from last night that did not fit the bill:
"The gift is not as precious as the thought." Nice sentiment but NOT a fortune.
"Your patience will pay off sooner or later." Frankly, anyone who can get away with writing a fortune with the words, "sooner or later" needs to face some serious job-performance consequences.
"Promise only when you can deliver." Huh? Really? This was in a cookie?
This one I liked merely because it sounded like Chinese-English:
"This day will be luck."
I kept cracking the cookies open until I found one worthy of the name. This one is definitely a keeper and will be posted on my fridge:
"There's a secret romance blooming! Go for it, in spite of your hesitation." oh cross my fingers and hope, hope, hope
