What better way to return to my Texas roots than to start off a Lone Star autumn with the Texas State Fair? Yep...greetings from the slightly oddly formed Big Tex and all the fried food you can imagine and probably even some you think you shouldn't. I grew up going to the fair, but it's definitely become even more of a spectacle now. I decided to skip the country-fried bacon (this year's prize-winning new fried food), and instead go for the fried smores. Chocolately, powder sugary bliss!
Have to say that I still love the Arts & Crafts building. I'm glad that they haven't gotten rid of the rows of prize-winning canned vegetables and fruits. Although I wouldn't like to necessarily eat them all, there is a certain beauty to rows of sparkling red raspberry jam or green mint jelly or bright orange carrots all lined up on shelves. Also glad to see that the art of latch hook hasn't been lost on this Wii generation!! Now if only they had had those pot-holders made from those loops of stretchy fabric...anyone remember that childhood craft?!
